WEATHER WOES

Just when we thought things were going so well, weatherwise at least! We had good spring rain that has produced some wonderful growth in the vineyard and we thought we had escaped any disease, BUT, the latest lot of rain - 50+mm, in the past few days and prolonged dampness has started the mildews. Just a little, but with forecasts of more rain and a wet summer ahead, God only knows where we'll end up. It's all controllable at the moment - as soon as the rain eases and the vines dry we'll be spraying. We have heard that some vineyards in Pokolbin have botrytis already in their immature bunches!! It may be one of those vintages we would all like to forget. For the moment though we're in good shape and everything is under control.

You should be able to see the rain spewing from the guttering and falling on the stairs.

  1. Do you have weather forecasts as bad as those we get in UK, Rog?

We were forecast a bad autumn, and by now, we should have been deluged as well. As it happens, our November is one of the mildest on record, and we've had no rain for ages...

This time last year, we were under nearly a foot of snow too!

    How many grape vines there...?

  3. Mike, weather forecasting here not too bad. We get an excellent radar system for local weather and the long range predictions aren't too bad. We were promised a wet summer last year but it was OK but it looks like the prediction for this year is pretty accurate. We only have 8 acres of vines and @ 1,000 to the acre that's 8,000 vines. Still it's a lot of work for the two of us. Still raining, so spray when we can do it will be very important to stop any further disease development. That's life in the country!

  4. We get 'Late Blight' probs here, and can sign up for a warning email, if there's a potential disaster looming...

As most chemical sprays are now banned by the bloated burocrat twits in Brussells, (nobody really takes any notice), I have to spray mine at dead of night, but it saved about 50 lbs of tomatoes this year, so that's the way it is...
